“Challenges, problem selection, and impact: A biased perspective on PhD studies”
Alexandra Olteanu
Bio: Alexandra Olteanu has received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. Her research focuses on understanding how various data and methodological limitations bound what we can learn from online social traces. The problems she tackles are often motivated by existing societal challenges such as disaster relief, climate change, and minority issues. Alexandra’s work has won two best paper awards (WISE 2014, Eurosys’ SNS workshop 2012), has been featured in the UN OCHA’s “World Humanitarian Data and Trends 2014” and in popular-media outlets such as The Washington Post and La Stampa, among others. During her graduate studies, Alexandra has also spent a summer at Microsoft Research Redmond and half a year at Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI).
